Founder, Little Dresses for Africa
Your sewing can make a difference in a child's life.
Started in 2008, Little Dresses for Africa has been an organization dedicated to the relief of children in Africa and around the world. Since appearing on Sewing With Nancy in 2011, friends and family have donated almost 200,000 dresses.
Want to sew a dress for a little girl? It's easy. Download the FREE pattern or purchase a dress kit. Send your dresses to Nancy's Notions and we'll take care of sending them to Little Dresses for Africa.
Rachel O'Neill travelled to Africa in 2008 as a rite of passage to celebrate her 50th birthday and fell in love with the people and the land. She returned on a second trip, and while visiting a village in Malawi, watched how hard the women worked.
When it came time for a meal, she watched little girls move to the back of the line, waiting last to be served food.
“It isn't fair to little girls to feel they were not welcome,” Rachel said.
She wanted to find a way to help girls feel valued and a mission was born to create simple dresses that could be given to girls. Her initial goal? Send 1,000 dresses to help girls in Africa recognize their value.
Today, Little Dresses for Africa has delivered more than 8 million dresses and britches and serves in 84 countries, including 47 in Africa.
Note from Rachel:
“Thank you for your support of Little Dresses for Africa. It's because of all of you sharing your talents with the most vulnerable - little girls. I wish that each of you could see their faces when they receive their dresses. We say 'We're not just sending dresses, we're sending hope,' and I can tell you from personal experience that you see the hope in their eyes when they realize that they can keep the dress, with no string attached and nothing required of them.”
