Binding with or without borders As a general rule of thumb, if your quilt doesn't have borders, a 1/4" wide quilt binding is the easiest to sew, and matches up with the seam allowance that's built-in to the edge of most quilt blocks. If your quilt has borders, the binding can be wider or narrower than 1/4".
