How-to: No-hassle buttonholes
If you've experienced panic attacks when thinking about sewing buttonholes, you are not alone. However, with some simple preparation and testing, your final results will be worth the effort. Watch Nancy's video demo above. Here are some of the highlights:
  1. Find the buttonhole foot that came with your machine. Or, purchase a low shank buttonhole foot.

  2. Place the button in the back of the sliding tray. Secure the slide guide next to the button and tighten the screw. Remove the button.
    1. If the button is wider than the tray, place a narrow paper strip on top of the button.
    2. Depress the paper around the sides and mark the length.
    3. Use the measurement on the paper to slide the guide to the correct length.

  3. Make a test buttonhole. Set your machine for a buttonhole stitch.
    1. Add the same interfacing to the test fabric as you'll use in your project.
    2. Then, sandwich the fabric with stabilizers—Wash Away Avalon Film Stabilizer, 12" x 11 yd. on top; Tear Away Cotton Soft Stabilizer on the bottom.
    3. Follow your owner's manual, stitch the sample buttonhole in the same direction—horizontal or vertical—as the finished project.
    4. Cut buttonhole.

  4. Transfer the buttonhole markings from the pattern to your fabric with the Simflex Expanding Gauge or 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge. An optional buttonhole marking product is Space Tape. Nancy demos all three of these notions in the above video.

  5. Stitch all the buttonholes—remember to use top and bottom stabilizers.

  6. Carefully tear away the stabilizers and cut open the buttonholes. You're done!
